We had a ‘pub quiz’ in November 2025. Do you know what it is? In England many pubs only have a few customers on Tuesday or Wednesday evenings. To get more people to come, they often have a ‘karaoke night’ or a ‘pub quiz’. In the pub quiz the quizmaster asks questions in different categories. Some questions are really easy so that every team scores some points. Others are really hard. The winning team usually wins bottles of wine or free beer.
In our ‘pub quiz’ there were 24 students from every level who made 8 teams of three people. Each team tried to answer 50 questions in ten categories, like ‘movies and music, ‘Japan’, ‘sports’, ‘science’ and so on. There were a few very hard questions, but the English grammar and vocabulary wasn’t too hard. We actually had a three-way tie – 3 teams got 37 correct answers! The winning team was chosen by the best of three questions. One question was “How many hearts does an octopus have?”
Anyway, it was a lot of fun. And on top of that, there was a first prize and a second prize, just like a real pub quiz. Of course, we weren’t in a pub so there wasn’t any beer or wine to drink during the quiz! However, we did have tea and coffee and many students brought in snacks too.
Hopefully we will have another one soon. And hopefully some more of you will have a chance to enter a pub quiz. Just like in England!
