Position of Adverbs

Adverbs of manner (how something is done).

Usually after the main verb, but before the main verb with passive sentences.

He drives quickly. He was seriously hurt in a crash.

Adverbs of frequency.

Before the main verb, but after ‘to be’.

I often go to Osaka on business. I am usually busy. I will never eat there again.

Adverbs of time and place.

Usually go at the end of the sentence. (Place is before time)

I clean my house once a week. I’ll be there in 10 minutes. I eat lunch at work every day.

Adverbs of degree (how much something is done, or to modify an adjective).

Very, extremely etc. go before adverbs or adjectives.

It’s very hard. He drove unbelievably quickly.

A lot, very much etc. go after a verb.

I love her a lot but she doesn’t like me much.

A little, a bit etc. go with verbs or adjectives.

It’s a little difficult so let’s relax a bit.

Adverbs of comment (your opinion).

Usually go at the beginning of a sentence.

Apparently he could swim. Unfortunately, the shark could swim faster!

Other adverbs.

These usually go before the main verb, but after ‘to be’.

I’ll probably come, but I’m just not sure yet.
