Learning tips for studying outside of class.

#1 Everything is good.

Remember, all learning is good whether you are learning English from the radio or from reading a book. All exposure to English is good.

#2 Linking learning to things we enjoy.

We enjoy learning when something interests us. So, if you can, try linking English to something that you enjoy. For example, if you like knitting or cooking, try reading a knitting website in English or watching a cooking video in English. If you can link your likes to English you will learn more.

#3 A little every day!

If you don’t have a lot of time, try learning English for just 5 minutes a day. This can be much more effective than doing homework for an hour one time a week. It helps your memory.

#4  Variety

Your brain is stimulated by variety. So, try learning English in brand new ways. From watching YouTube song videos (type in the song title plus ‘lyrics’ and you can read the songs words), to reading books, and listening with audiobooks, to watching English language dramas or children’s shows. Do something different with your learning.

#5 Thinking in English.

The next time you plan to go shopping try doing it with English. “Oh, I need to get some bananas and some fish. Maybe I can use the fish for a packed lunch.” Try thinking in English more in daily situations and you will start to think in English more naturally.

#6. Practice makes perfect.

Of course, you practice speaking English in class, which is great, but the more you can practice outside of class, the smoother and more natural your spoken English will become. However, finding ways to use spoken English outside of class can be difficult. Try reading a book aloud (especially dialogue) or singing along to songs. Or try chatting to tourists, or to friends or relatives abroad using Microsoft Teams, or similar. Another possibility is forming a group with other students to practice speaking together.
